Konica Minolta Sensing, Inc. (Headquarters: Sakai, Osaka, JAPAN; President: Toshihiko Karasaki; hereinafter referred to as "Konica Minolta") is proud to announce that the Spectrophotometer CM-5, a top-port benchtop spectrophotometer*1 with innovative operation to make taking color measurements simple enough for anyone to perform, will be introduced in December 2009

Color measurement is performed in a broad range of fields including not only the automotive, home appliance, and textile fields but also the food industry, cosmetic industry, chemical industry, etc. In all fields, a wide variety of people perform color measurements, from people who use color-measuring instruments every day for color control on the production line to people in R & D or quality inspection who measure "color" on occasion as one of many inspection items. In all cases, the ability to measure color quickly, easily, and without mistakes is an important point.
Since the introduction of the epoch-making handheld tristimulus colorimeter*2 Chroma Meter CR-100 in 1982, Konica Minolta has been deeply involved in color- measurement fields, providing instruments used by R & D or production personnel in a wide variety of fields where color measurement is essential.
The new Spectrophotometer CM-5 was developed to support new product development, pursuit of safety, and improved quality in various fields including foods, chemicals, pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, etc. based on the concept of "usability" with the aim of making it possible for anyone to use it comfortably and without worry. The CM-5 reflects the requests of various customers of our measuring instruments for operation that enables anyone to take color measurements easily and without mistakes.
For example, a USB memory stick can be prepared containing a user’s measurement conditions, and these conditions can then be read by the CM-5 by plugging the USB memory stick into the instrument, ensuring that measuring conditions can be set easily without mistakes. Plus, all functions necessary for taking measurements are built into the CM-5, so there is no need to connect it to a computer as with other benchtop instruments, and measurements can be started almost immediately after switching it on.
An additional feature of the CM-5 is that it is designed according to the principles of "color universal design" with all screens and operation buttons distinguishable by both color and shape to enable even people with various types of color-blindness to use the CM-5 easily without confusion.
Konica Minolta continues to develop precise sensing technology and applications in order to offer solutions matching customer needs and to maintain our status as "essential" for customers.
The CM-5 has various functions to ensure that color measurements can be taken easily, quickly, and without mistakes by anyone, even first-time or once-in-a-while users.
A white calibration plate is installed inside the CM-5’s shutter. White calibration/100% calibration is performed automatically immediately after the instrument is switched on*, so there’s no need to go through the calibration procedure manually.

Measurements can be taken easily by anyone by just following the instructions shown on the large LCD.

User’s measurement conditions can be stored on a USB memory stick and then these settings can be easily restored on the CM-5 by plugging the USB memory stick into the instrument. This makes it easy to set measurement conditions without mistakes when a single instrument is used by multiple users. Target data and sample data can also be downloaded onto the USB memory stick for later analysis on a computer.
The CM-5 integrates all features needed to take color measurements in a single, compact instrument.
The CM-5 has a footprint that is approximately the same size as a sheet of B4 paper, so it’s easy to find space for it on a desk or lab bench. At approximately 5.8kg, it’s also much lighter than previous benchtops.
The CM-5 is equipped with an operation panel for making various settings and a large full-color LCD that can show measurement results as not only numeric values but also on spectral graphs or colorimetric plots. So there’s no need to connect it to a computer for basic color control. And the LCD display can be set to any of 7 languages: English, Japanese, French, German, Italian, Spanish, and Simplified Chinese
Reflectance:
The top-port design of the CM-5 makes it easy to measure a wide variety of subjects.

Solid objects can be measured by simply placing the object on top of the measurement port; powders or pastes can be measured by putting them in a petri dish first.
Transmittance:

The CM-5 has a large transmittance chamber capable of measuring solid subjects such as films or plates up to 60mm thick and the chamber has no sides that would limit subject size. Liquids can be measured by pouring into cells that can then be placed in the transmittance chamber.
The CM-5 can measure the Gardner, Iodine, Hazen (APHA), European Pharmacopoeia, and US Pharmacopeia values of liquids without the need for handling calibration solutions.
