Measuring Instruments

The food and agriculture industry is one of the industries in which color meters are commonly used. Their application is continually expanding, including color measurement and management of processed foods as well as agricultural, farm, and marine products.
For processed foods, color meters have been widely used for color management of various food products, including beverages, snacks, dairy products, seasonings, noodles, fish paste, and jams. Products which are displayed in large numbers on supermarket shelves, in particular, are strictly managed with color meters. In addition, color meters are often used for consumer preference surveys or for R&D work on processing methods.
For agricultural, farm, and marine products, color meters are widely used to check the growth or to classify grades.
For agricultural products, major applications include grade judgment of vegetables and fruits based on color (Users index function of the CR-400 is effective) and growth judgment of rice and other grains using the SPAD-502Plus.
For marine products, there are applications such as the growth control of farmed fish by measuring the color of fish to determine the feed blending ratio and feeding method, or the grade judgment of Nori or laver seaweed, for quality control.
For farm products, spectrophotometers conduct a spectral analysis of the redness of meat, playing an important role in the freshness judgment of raw meat and in the research on methods to maintain freshness.
Also in the food industry, non-contact 3D digitizers are widely used. Their application ranges from volume measurement of bread to growth control of mangos. They are also used in the process of designing food packages and drink bottles.
