The horns of the Black Rhinoceros are sold at a high price in some countries. They were hunted for their horns and one time, the number dropped to under 2,500.

Where they live

Black Rhinoceroses live in the midwestern area of Africa.

What they eat

Black Rhinoceroses mainly eat leaves and branches of bushes. Sometimes they also eat grass.

What they are like

Black Rhinoceroses are actually gray. They love playing in the mud, so their bodies are usually in the color of the mud!

Hunted for the horns, the Black Rhinoceros is in danger of disappearing...
Like other kinds of rhinos, the Black Rhinoceros was hunted for the horns. It is believed that the rhinos' horns can be used for medicine. But, nobody really knows. It became popular to use the horns of the Black Rhinoceros in the handle part of a knife. And people started to sell them at a high price. This is why the number of the Black Rhinoceros dropped to 2,410 in 1995.

Few babies born, mothers take great care
he Black Rhinoceros does not bring many babies into the world. Because wild Black Rhinoceroses have few enemies, many babies can grow into adults. However, humans became their new enemy. The number of Black Rhinoceros died became greater than the number born. Now, we have a project to protect the Black Rhinoceros. And so, the number is slowly increasing. But we must shut the hunters down! If not, the Black Rhinoceros will die off someday.
