Where they live

The Ryukyus Islands Tree Rat has three homes: Okinawa Main Island, Amami Oshima, and Tokunoshima in Japan.

What they eat

Pasania nuts, berries and sweet potatoes are the love of Ryukyus Islands Tree Rat's life. They like munching on insects too.

What they are like

The Ryukyus Islands Tree Rat makes warm nests in tree trunks. The Ryukyus Islands Tree Rat is a big boy, so it needs an extra big tree to build a home.

Hey! Don't take my woods, tree climbing is my life!
The Ryukyus Islands Tree Rat is Japan's favorite big boy. It lives on Okinawa, Amami Oshima, and Tokunoshima only. It a master climber and trees are its life. However, the woods and its home are being wasted for dams and roads, if it has no trees to climb on, the Ryukyus Islands Tree Rat will die, for sure!

Hey, you are not Japanese Mongoose!
The mongoose is increasing in population and destroying the Ryukyus Islands Tree Rat. The mongoose is not a Japanese animal but was brought by people to clean up habu vipers. The habu vipers are also the Ryukyus Islands Tree Rat's enemy, but the mongoose are not good at cleaning up habu vipers. The Ryukyus Islands Tree Rat is in great danger because foolish people brought the mongoose to Japan.
