In the production of magnetic hard disk drives, glass substrates used are lighter than alumina substrates and offer superior strength and shock-resistance, making them ideally suited to high-density recording. Glass substrates are widely used in HDD applications, particularly in servers, which demand high reliability and high-speed access, and in 2.5-inch disks for laptop computers, which must be highly shock resistant. Glass hard disks are coming to be used more extensively in other applications as well, and demand is expected to increase rapidly in the future. Konica Minolta Optics’s comprehensive production system, which incorporates processes from material development to melting, press molding, and polishing, enables a rapid response in providing outstanding products with the high quality that customers demand.
