Reflectometric interference spectroscopy (RIfS) enables this system to be used in a wide range of applications, including the evaluation of biomolecules such as proteins, nucleic acids, and sugars, as well as functional polymers. It can also be used for real-time, label-free observation of dynamic reactions.
White light is directed onto an optically thick film, and the peak positionof the spectral reflectance is measured when interference is generated by reflectance. When molecules bind on the film, changing the optical
thickness, the optical path length changes, resulting in changes in the interference wavelength as well. That is, the peak position of the spectral reflectance of the reflected light shifts, and the intermolecular interaction is measured from this peak position.

A thin silicon nitride (SiN) film is vapor-deposited on one side of a silicon (Si) substrate. Surface modification that supports measurement can be achieved with either a chemical method using a silane coupling agent, or a physical method such as spin coating.
A flow cell is made of transparent silicone rubber (PDMS) and has a flow path formed on it. A sensor chip is bonded to the flow cell to form a sealed flow path.
The Micro Total Analysis System (μTAS), noted for its high accuracy, high sensitivity, and quick reaction time, is a system that uses a chip with a micro flow path to analyze a minute amount of specimen. It is expected to be commercialized in medical applications such as immunity and DNA tests, and in environmental applications such as water quality and atmospheric measurements. Applying our high-accuracy mold-machining technology, molding technology, and bonding technology, Konica Minolta Optics supplies high-quality μTAS chips on a mass-production basis.
