Konica Minolta Establishes a Partnership with MJ MATERIAL on “Intelligent Recycled Materials” Characterized by Superior Supply Reliability and Quality Consistency
Aiming for Commercialization in the fiscal year 2026 by Introducing Production Line to MJ MATERIAL’s New Plant
October 8, 2025
Tokyo (October 8, 2025) - Konica Minolta, Inc. (Konica Minolta) today announced that the Company has established a partnership with MJ MATERIAL TECHNOLOGY SDN BHD (MJ MATERIAL) on “intelligent recycled materials,” which are recycled plastic materials characterized by superior supply reliability and quality consistency.
Under the partnership, MJ MATERIAL will introduce technology and equipment, which incorporates Konica Minolta’s expertise, to MJ MATERIAL’s new production base in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, which will open in the spring of 2026. MJ MATERIAL will manufacture intelligent recycled materials and sell them to its customers in Asia with Konica Minolta, who are end-product manufacturers, for electronic devices and home appliances. Konica Minolta will receive fees for technology licensing depending on MJ MATERIAL’s revenue from its customers. Konica Minolta and MJ MATERIAL have been working on verification in the market with the aim of achieving commercialization in the fiscal year 2026.
Intelligent Recycled Materials
Intelligent recycled materials refer to recycled plastic materials with enhanced supply reliability and quality consistency by combining the latest technologies and know-how of the two companies. They are expected to cut costs by using waste plastics from electric home appliances to reduce the cost of raw materials. Thanks to these benefits, they will be supplied as resin materials for electronic devices, electric home appliances, and vehicles, which require stable material properties. The deployment of intelligent recycled materials will contribute to driving the business growth of the two companies and realizing a highly sustainable society.

“Based on its track record and experience of actively using recycled plastic materials, Konica Minolta deeply understands the challenges faced by customers,” said Ryuji Kamata, General Manager, Manufacturing and Procurement for Digital Workplace/Professional Print, Corporate Vice President, Konica Minolta. “With technologies and solutions to address such challenges, we will offer recycled plastic materials optimized for each customer. Through recycled plastic materials, we will help realize a sustainable society by addressing customers’ challenges and expanding this business.”
“I am confident that the technology to stabilize the quality of recycled plastic materials, which was developed by Konica Minolta, helps tackle challenges encountered by many customers who use recycled plastic materials,” said Weng Wenbin, President of MJ MATERIAL. “I believe that the combination of this technology and our well-established manufacturing philosophy will enhance the value of recycled plastic materials and broaden their application, thereby realizing a clean, waste-free society.”
Konica Minolta will continue to reduce environmental impact by accelerating collaboration with many companies to form a recycling-oriented society and create business.
Background to the Establishment of the Partnership
With the fiscal year 2025 positioned as a year for establishing the foundation for growth, Konica Minolta has been promoting technological development and business deployment focusing on seeds for future growth, which are priority development themes in the medium and long term.
Konica Minolta started the manufacture of recycled plastic materials, which is one of the seeds for future growth, for its MFPs in the fiscal year 2011 based on materials development technologies cultivated through business operations, and started to supply the materials for external products in the fiscal year 2024.
Konica Minolta has established a partnership with MJ MATERIAL with the aim of deploying the intelligent recycled materials business that meets market needs by combining Konica Minolta’s proprietary sensing and AI technologies and MJ MATERIAL’s end-to-end process from collection to production.
Benefits of Intelligent Recycled Materials
Supply Reliability Ensured by Sorting of Materials and Sensing and AI Technologies
To manufacture recycled plastic materials with a certain level of quality, it is necessary to purchase high-quality waste plastics as raw materials, which are characterized by high purity and stability. This is a challenge due to limited supply. MJ MATERIAL’s new production facility in Kuala Lumpur is equipped with know-how in sorting, which combines multiple techniques, improves the accuracy of removing impurities and enables efficient selection of raw materials which can be used in the downstream processes.
In addition, Konica Minolta’s proprietary sensing and AI technologies make it possible to mix raw materials containing waste plastic materials under conditions set by AI and thereby obtain physical properties and functions equivalent to those of virgin materials. This is expected to enable recycled plastic materials to be produced from wide range of waste plastics as raw materials, ensure a stable supply, and offer recycled plastic materials inexpensively.
Improving the Consistency of Molding Quality by Optimizing the Model for Each Customer
When manufacturing resin parts from recycled plastic materials, performance variations are greater than those of virgin materials, increasing the risk of defects. In addition, the specifications required for each customer and part vary, and molding conditions must be verified through trial and error with engineer’s experience. Thus, mass production through molding requires a significant number of man-hours.
To address this issue, Konica Minolta’s proprietary AI optimization model is used to propose molding conditions optimized for each part. This enables mass production, even for parts that are difficult to mold, while consistently ensuring the quality required by customers.
MJ MATERIAL
MJ MATERIAL is a recycled resin manufacturer which develops and manufactures highly functional recycled materials in Malaysia by using waste plastics as raw materials and supplies to global customers its recycled plastic materials manufactured through cutting-edge recycling technologies, including automated sorting machines, and polymer technologies.
Konica Minolta and MJ MATERIAL started to collaborate in the manufacture of recycled plastic materials in the fiscal year 2014. They have marketed recycled plastic materials that meet the needs of stakeholders by combining their technologies and know-how in recycled plastics.
