In the last few years, demand from security related fields has increased due to concerns over crime prevention. Facilities such as schools, hospitals, office building and factories are taking measures such as hiring security guards to increase their security to 24 hours a day.
From an international perspective, security is essential in places where large numbers of people gather, such as airports, train stations, sports arenas, as well as street-level crime prevention in commercial areas.
While budget reductions and optimization have increased demand for security hardware such as cameras, large facilities including factories and nighttime parks have seen an increase in unnecessary alerts caused by imprecise sensors.

Until now, sensors could only accurately detect the presence of a subject, and it was difficult to perceive the target’s size and shape. The number of lasers had to be increased to improve accuracy, which caused the new problem of blind spots that occurred between the laser beams. Konica Minolta applied its proprietary optical technology to these technical challenges and created a wide-area 3D-LiDAR, using only a single laser beam with high scanning accuracy, high resolution and no blind spots.

Proprietary laser projection/reception technology + wide-area scanning technology
3D-LiDAR emits a laser to search an area for subjects and measures the distance a subject is located. Distance is measured using TOF (Time of flight), which is the time it takes for the projected laser light to reflect off of a subject and return to the sensor. 3 dimensional images are acquired through the minute differences in time the laser light takes to reflect, making real-time measurement at 10fps possible. The strength of the light’s reflection is also recorded.
Proprietary laser projection/reception and wide-area scanning technologies achieve a maximum detection radius of 120 degrees horizontally. A high vertical resolution has been achieved with 24 laser vertical lines. Wide-area scanning technology makes it possible to scan far away without space between lines for high-accuracy data with no blind spots. Detection coverage ranges from 50 meters for people, 100 meters for vehicles (with reflectors) and a maximum range of 200 meters.
Real-Time 3D Data Acquisition
3D-LiDAR can not only distinguish between shapes and objects, but moving subjects as well. This means it is possible to acquire data on moving people or vehicles in a city. With 10fps real-time detection, even measurement of the space between a number of people and their walking speed is possible. From the accumulated behavioral data, patterns can be determined in pedestrian and vehicle behaviors, predicting unintentional jaywalking or detecting suspicious activity. Another characteristic of 3D measurement is the ability see data in a 3D environment, from a head-on perspective, a bird’s eye view, and any other.
In addition to acquiring data on moving people and vehicles from various angles, feedback from structures such as geography and buildings can be acquired.

Real-time detection in
self-driving vehicle development.
The capabilities of real-time detection are a perfect match for self-driving vehicle development. Self-driving vehicles must be able to detect their own positions as well as other vehicles, pedestrians and obstacles in the vicinity. 3D-LiDAR linked with gyro sensors (for stability) and GPS (for location data) can acquire highly-detailed 3D real-time data, detecting pedestrians to ensure safety and creating high-precision maps for self-driving. It can also tell the difference between road lines and asphalt.
When self-driving at night, a detection system must not be affected by headlights, street lighting and ambient light and can accurately detect vehicles and pedestrians. In Konica Minolta’s high-accuracy coaxial optical technology, light emitted from the 3D-LiDAR returns along the same path. Therefore, sunlight, headlights and ambient light are filtered as much as possible, making it a high-quality choice for outdoor use, such as security. By measuring the strength of the returning light, it distinguishes between subjects such as road lines and asphalt.

Behavioral Analysis in Sports/Marketing.
Use of behavioral analysis in wide-area security, marketing and sports is anticipated in the future. In security for example, even higher-precision security systems can be established that can tell the difference between people and animals based on size, as well as behavioral analysis data. In marketing, shelves could be monitored in stores to identify popular products.
In sports, using several 3D-LiDARs together at a soccer stadium could track players’ positions on the vast field in real time. Detailed data on each player’s running speed and distance could be gathered, as well as creating a heat map of their area of movement to possibly aid in the creation of more effective strategies.
